However, it does not have to be like this at all, turbos were first used in aircraft engines as a way of reducing the power losses achieved at high speeds and the reduced air pressure at altitude. But soon the turbo was finding its way under the hood of production cars as way of increasing power and improving fuel economy, with GM adding a turbo to the Oldsmobile Cutlass Jetfire in 1962. However, the most famous early adopter would be Porsche with the 911 Turbo.

Basically the turbo is a centrifuge powered by the engines own exhaust gases, it will create high pressure at the time of each engine stroke, this forces a higher mass mixture into the cylinders and therefore improving performance at every stroke of the engine. Nevertheless, this would not work without a wastegate, this simple prevents the pressure from getting too high by venting any excess gases that have built up inside the turbo, and too much pressure can mean critical engine damage!

Choosing a new turbo is fairly easy these days, basically the car owner needs to decide whether to go for power or cost, in general terms it is always seemed better to go for a slightly smaller turbo as this is going to be easier and indeed more fun drive, but you lose power from the top end. It seems that a smaller turbo would be better for road cars, while performance and track cars go for the biggest turbo possible to get the maximum out of their engine.

Points to consider when looking at buying a new Turbo for your car;

POWER:

• Think in horsepower not boost.

• Boost is just a number that you will have to run on your engine to make a certain horsepower.

• How much power do you want to make? Be realistic, the more accurate that you are, the better tuned your forced induction system will be.

• Can your vehicle (not just the engine, but the entire setup) handle such power?

• Remember the turbocharger is generally not the weakest link.

•Forged pistons, connecting rods, head studs, etc.

• “As much as possible” is not a goal.

INTENDED USAGE:

• What are you using the vehicle for?

• Race or street use?

• The way that you will be using the vehicle dramatically changes the sizing of the turbocharger and intercooler needs.

• Your choice of transmission type and gearing will greatly affect the performance and characteristics of the turbocharger, keep this in mind.

PACKAGING:

• Will the turbocharger(s) fit in your vehicles space constraints? Consider using differently sized compressor housings to more easily fit a given location.

The Nissan GT-R is my all time favourite car as it stands but combined with the fantastic Boost Logic Godzilla turbo kit, then this is simply the ultimate Nissan, sure it there is a huge price tag of $9,600 to add to the cost of the car, but it has to be worth it!

I know what you are thinking, this is not rocket science, but actually, it almost is and there are new builders out there that could do a lot with this information.

So basically here is what happens when you put your foot down, the engine throws out exhaust, but instead of going out the back it is channelled through the turbo manifold and then into the turbo’s turbine inlet. As the gas flows through the chamber, it spins the turbine wheel and then the gases continue out through the exhaust.

That is how the turbo operates so how does it produce power? The faster the engine revs the more gas is produced and like a hair dryer the volume increases until the point where it becomes compressed and this is the boost. Before this can be used the air has to be cooled, that’s where the intercooler comes in, the cooler the better. The air is forced into the combustion chamber and this action is what increases power.

Selecting a turbo for your project:

Calculate the airflow for the engine in its naturally aspirated form

Use the following formula for standard atmospheric pressure: CFM=(CID x RPM x 0.5 x Ev) / 1728. (CID: cubic inch displacement; EV: volumetric efficiency (0.80-0.90); CFM: air flow rate)

Knowing your desired boost level, calculate the airflow rate under boost by multiplying the pressure ratio by airflow rate (na – cfm)

Calculate the pressure ratio: (14.7+Boost/14.7) – then calculate the air flow rate under boost by multiplying the pressure ratio by your air flow rate from step one: CFM x pressure ratio (for twin turbo applications divide this number by 2).

To covert CFM to lbs/min, use (CFM x 0.076 = lbs/min).

Use compressor maps to find the turbo best suited to the air flow rate and pressure ratios you have attained

You can get calculate a rough estimate on Engine horsepower using the following formulas: Lower value: 0.052 x CID x (psi boost + 14.7) = bhp Higher value: 0.077 x CID x (psi boost + 14.7) = bhp

The 350Z is one of the best cars to come out of Japan, well that is what I think anyhow. These cars probably don’t actually need much doing to them to make them hot. However, of what that means is that these cars end up being something seriously cool and a dream to drive.

This model Honda is a one of those that often gets chosen by the older driver because they see it a little sporty, security of it being a Honda and because is a your average four door sedan car. This is a favourite amongst that target group and the reason why not too of these cars go on to become a great import builders finished.

Apart from that, this is a car ripe for modification. It has the body and style that lends itself to being just slightly altered with nip and tuck here and there. Under the hood is where most of the action is going to take place with plenty of a work and money spent on turning this not too bad engine into a beast.

I have to admit that out of all that cars that we write about and feature on this site the Nissan 350Z is my favourite. I know that there are those that do not think that this is a supercar, but you only have to look at the image to realise that this is a brilliant car and just happens to be bullet proof too.

This particular Nissan 350Z has had some extensive work done on it as you will be able to make out from the specs below but it still carries the shape of the original car and that is what matters to fans, who have not quite summoned up enough courage to go out and buy for themselves.

I have to admit that I have never really been a fan of the Scion, that was until we started seeing them change into fantastic machine like this one owned by Mike Ma, the car although not totally transformed has taken on a different look. By taking on a Scion as a project proves that the owner loves a challenge and is not going to be bother about the purists that demand a Skyline or Integra for this job. However, something like the Scion needs careful consideration and a clear plan right through to the end of the project.

Obviously being given the car from the makers is a good incentive, in fact it means that the job is even harder now, because not only is there fans and media to please there is the firm that made the car in the first place to look out for. Who ever said that import car builders always like to take the easy way out, in fact if anything they about thing the hard way and it is shows in the finished product.

Could this be the coolest Nissan 240SX in the country if not the world? If it isn’t then we would like to see the car that beats this wonderful machine from Dennis Som. As you plainly see the car is a convertible, but that is no ordinary hood on there because it is the Tsunami Silvia hood one of only two in the US made by DDrug.

Ordinarily the colour would not be top of the list for build, either as it is just too orange, but the longer that you at the car the better the body work looks. This is an orange machine that people like, if this colour was on a Neon or something similar the driver would be laughed at.

A collaboration is always going to produce something spectacular and this Scion XD is definitely some sort of super car that looks as if it has been factory made, but of course, we all know what a Scion XD looks like before the work has been done.

This car has been built by Team Koshak and All Star, this was originally designed for the SEMA 2008 show, the most prominent thing about the car is the roof, or rather the lack of one. This is something really makes a car stand from the rest and the way that this has been done is for impact, which they have achieved.

The colour green features heavily on this car and even as you inside there is a splash of Samari Green greets you in the centre console. This colour is themed all around the car with touches of carefully placed paint to highlight the colour throughout the entire project.

A Nissan Sentra from 2002, is not the sort of car that you expect to find at a show or race day, but when it has been worked on to the extent that this one has, then it definitely deserves to right up there with all of the other winners and some seriously deserving runner ups too.

This is one hell of a beautiful looking machine that hardly resembles the car that it used to be, it has had so much work done on it that apart from the body shell there is probably nothing on there that is original. Yet this is a car of extremes, from what started off as an average car has finished up looking like something the mind of a mechanical genius.

What is amazing is the interior, this is like nothing that any production car is going have, in fact the interior of this car is like something out of this world, with black, red and silver taking over the inside of this machine. It is so fantastic inside that would not want to drive it for the fear of getting finger prints on some of those surfaces.
