To get an idea of the thinking behind this car we need to look at the Honda Civic during the mid eighties, this is a car born out of the need to produce something for everybody and it certainly does that, with four body styles and the choice of several engine and gearbox options. However, the car that we are interested here is the three door hatchback that would have been powered by the 76 HP 1.5 litre engine. But the Civic is nothing but versatile and because of this it should be a dream car for import builders as they need cars with plenty of spares available and they also have to be something different too, which the Civic is. So take this unassuming looking car and start to pull it apart and you are left with a good base for a great build. The first thing that stands out with this car is the colouring, this bright yellow and blue design is the colouring of builder racing team, Spoon Sports, this team is well known in Japan not just as a racers.

Nevertheless, as testers for Honda too, this car from 1985 is significant because this is when the company was formed, this is where Spoon started and now Tatsuru Ichishima the president of Spoon is a national hero and racing icon.

The car is totally original, this is what Spoon was built on and so it deserves a bit of recognition, as all cars that a led the charge should be, this is a turning point for the company. If the car failed there would be no Spoon Sports as we know it. The same can be said for other top teams too; there future is based firmly on what happened in the past!

The car uses the standard Honda 1.6 litre and the 2.0 litre engine, both of which suit the car perfectly, but we are looking at the third generation Civic Type R here. This car has the 2.0 litre power unit with a lovely six speed manual gearbox, it easily produces around 200 HP and for a car of this size, that is some serious power output. The Civic has always had that sporty edge to it and the third generation Type R does not disappoint in any way, even though it comes in a choice of the three door hatchback or the popular four door sedan body styling.

Modifying a car such as this, take vision and flair to take a fairly new car and make it better, it takes guts to rip a car such that to pieces and then rebuild it in order to make the car better than it is was when it rolled off the production line. But this is more than a car that has been polished and stickered up, this is a car with a racing edge on it, it make look like a Type R, but it is much more than that.

The first thing that stands out is the power, due to some clever engineering this car now produces around 237 HP, which may not seem like a serious increase, but it is when you consider the size and weight of this car. Secondly, there are not power bulges or pointless spoilers, this car is cool and smart both inside and out, it is exactly how the designers of Type R III would have made it, if they could!

The reason for its worldwide success is down to one thing, choice! This car offered the buyer a huge amount of choices at the build stage, so although the finished model is a Civic, it can be completely different to the next car off the line. Basically, you have three body styles, the two door coupe, the three door hatchback and the four door sedan. Then there is the engine choice of a 1.3 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre and the 1.8 litre, but in the gear box department, there is only the four speed auto and a five speed manual gearbox. Therefore, it is clear to see why the Honda Civic is so popular with so many different types of car buyer.

When we say mildly modified, what we mean is that that this car has got what it takes on the outside, but under the hood and inside little has been done, apart from the three inch exhaust, which as most of us know will produce a really wonderful sound even from a small sized 1.5 litre un-modified engine. This is a car that has been built to turn heads and it certainly does that, it has the sound, the body and it is white too.

However, this is a car that has come to the end of the line with this builder, yes, it is up for sale at around $2,500, the only problem is that this is car based in the UK, sorry folks but this was a car too good to overlook simply because of its location. For a builder experienced in performance this is ideal as the exterior is completed and the engine department could be enhanced by adding a DC2 Type R engine from an Integra, this can produce around 170 HP, now you are talking!

“Getting more air into your engine and more exhaust out is the key to a performance motor. That is where exhaust headers come in. Exhaust performance headers do away with the performance-robbing exhaust manifold that came with your car. Headers provide each cylinder with its own mini exhaust pipe, which means exhaust headers prevent the backpressure that occurs in a common exhaust manifold. When cylinders do not have to fight each other to expel their exhaust, they can put more power through the wheels. Combined with a high performance cold air intake, and a cat-back exhaust system, a header system will remove all restrictions and your engine will perform at its potential.”

Usually we are spending out time looking cars that look great and perform to the max all of the time; we have little regard for the type of fuel that these cars use or even how much of it goes into the tank and comes out of the exhaust when the engine is finished with it. However, should we be bothered about emissions and fuel consumption, when we take a look at a newly modified car! For the manufacturers they have little choice and so if we choose to modify a new car then there is little choice in the matter. Just because these cars have been designed to be less polluting and more fuel efficient it does not mean that we have to be driving around in battery powered cars with a top speed of 40 mph and a range of fifty miles on a good day. There are some cool looking cars that are not only fuel efficient they are capable of hitting 0 – 60 mph in under nine seconds, this is where the Honda Compact Renaissance Zero (CR-Z) comes into its own, this car may be classified as a compact hybrid electric automobile, but also that … Continue reading →

However, should we be bothered about emissions and fuel consumption, when we take a look at a newly modified car! For the manufacturers they have little choice and so if we choose to modify a new car then there is little choice in the matter.

This particular model has been given the Spoon Sports treatment, this is a true hybrid car designed and built by Honda, and it is powered by a 1.5 litre iVtec four cylinder SOHC engine with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system and a six speed manual gearbox. The car is well capable of producing over 120 HP. However, is the CR-Z a good replacement for the Civic Type R and the S2000? Well Spoon Sports have managed to tweak it enough to squeeze 150 HP out this eco sports car, so yes there is always potential when there are import builder around.

Honda brought out the Si branding for the third generation model in the mid eighties, it meant that slight modifications would be made to the car before it had even left factory. so you can already see the appeal of this branding as it meant someone with no skills or experience could enjoy driving around in something that was slightly different to average Honda Civic, but some people want more and that is when you enter the world of the import builder.

Check out this Civic Si, it would have stated off as your average car, imagine the previous lives that this car would had and now like the result of some genetic experiment. The car just sits there with that menacing look, a turbo charged heart beats under that hood and it waits for the time when whoever gets behind the wheel floors the gas pedal just to see what it is going under there.

Honda have been clever with their cars, they appear to have been designed with the import builder in mind as the car has its first couple of owners who use it for work, shopping and the odd trip. but once it looks as if the car has reached the end of its life up steps the import builder, who with some time and cash can produce a brilliant car such as the one that we can see hear.

Yet, this car is a head turner, attention to the finer points make this a great show vehicle and according to the owner the is not complete yet, so there is hope that this great looking Honda Civic Mugen Type R replica, will soon be riding on a some performance enhancing suspension upgrades from Tein!

Product Description for the DC Sports 4-2-1 Ceramic Coated Performance Exhaust Manifold Header;

You know you have to have a DC header on your sport compact to really get the most out of your engine’s abilities. All the air you can squeeze into the cylinders does not make a bit of difference if the burned gasses cannot get out efficiently. In addition, guess what: your factory manifold is not efficient. A DC header, on the other hand, is made up of individual runners heading back to a common collector. Compare that to your stock manifold, which most likely looks like a log that all the cylinders have to dump into. Since each cylinder gets its own individual exhaust pipe on the DC header, you avoid competing exhaust pulses, backpressure, and unequal pressures, all of which can stop the exhaust in its tracks and robbed your engine of precious horsepower. A DC Sports header will ensure that you get the most out of your induction system. There is no mistake with stainless steel used throughout, thick, laser cut flanges, machine welds, and ceramic coating to enhance engine efficiency your DC Sports header will help you get the most for a long time to come.

Product Description of the Honda Civic D16Z6 OBX Individual Throttle Body;

OBX Individual Throttle Body Kits allow the engine to operate more efficiently by decreasing pumping losses to achieve more horsepower. By allowing a single throttle body to feed air to each individual cylinder, throttle response can be improved dramatically. The decreased intake tract restrictions also improve horsepower with proper engine management tuning. OBX Individual Throttle Body Kits are the perfect upgrade to any naturally aspirated vehicle to achieve great throttle response, increased horsepower and better drivability on the track or street.

The Honda Civic has been around for decades now and in its many different styles the car carries on to inspire a wide range of import builders who see the Civic as a great opportunity to gain experience and practice their trade. The availability of these cars means that all budgets can be catered for. this is due to the sheer amount of Civics of all ages still on the road, or tucked away in a garage. However, to make a Civic great, the builder is going to need a vision to go with the skills and of course a pocket full of cash too! Who said that building a Honda Civic to the standard that we can see here was ever going to be cheap, the parts used in a build of this standard can often work out more expensive than the cost of the car in the first place, but the results are clear and it is clearly worth it. One thing that amazes me about this car is that the builder uses it as his daily ride, so this is not a machine that is wrapped up in bubble wrap and transported from event to event.

This is a real car driven on a daily basis and that is so cool and worth a trip to LA just to try an catch a sight of the blue body and 16 x 7 inch red Gab Sports Rims, just to add a bit of contrast in there and in fact they do look very cool too!

This maybe the 99 model, but the engine has been replaced with the later 2001, Integra R Type engine, this offers the builder more opportunities to develop the performance as the later engine is so much better than the original power plant. At the end of the a build is a personal journey, people who look at the finished item make judgement on it, but it is the builder and driver who will ultimately decide if this project right.

The first thing that you notice about this car has to be the wheels, you simply cannot miss these great looking eighteen inch Veloice rims that have been cover by massive Falken tyres. However, there is much more to this car than first meet the eye, it is the interior that has seen the most work done on it and it is pretty spectacular by anyone’s standards.

Music is the key here; you have to think that the design has been thought up by someone where music plays a major part in their life, with exception of the exterior paint work. Most of this builder’s budget most have gone on this staggering interior that looks like a cross between a recording studio and the flight deck of the modern airliner; it is a seriously cool car, none the less.

However, there is a lot of competition out there. One of the first things that you notice about the Civic is the space available under the hood, this means that swapping the engine, adding components such as superchargers and the gear needed to make it work is easy. There is also the added advantage of the builder being able to reroute the wires and cables, as has been done with this build. Not only in the form of the car, but in the finished build, as there are plenty of people out there that would love to get their hands on one of these machines and turn into the number one build in the State, the US or why not even the world.

From the data provided it looks as if this car is well capable of producing around 160 HP from its 1.6 litre engine, which is nice going. It is not too powerful as to make it a track only car and it has the necessary power to produce that wonderful sound that can be heard several blocks away, but in a way that makes you cringe, the sound makes you want to know where it is coming from and you are not disappointed.

The car has been finished off in a black that is so deep that you feel that you could almost put your hand into the panel, while in contrast the interior has been a bright red finish. This may sound a bit over the top whereas in fact the interior is seriously well thought out and any other colour just would not make the grade in the case, as this is one hell of Honda Civic Si.

Product Description for the Cold Air Induction Intake System with Air Filter – Honda Civic SI;

Cold air induction intake system for the Honda Accord is engineered to reduce intake restriction by smoothing out and straightening airflow. This design allows the Honda Accord engine to inhale a larger volume of air than the OEM air filter assembly. The extended aluminium piping amplifies the effect by delivering colder air that contains more oxygen. The greater volume of air translates into a more powerful combustion (sound). The best of both worlds is at your fingertips. Cold air intake system takes it to the next level by making installation a breeze. The short distance of the pipe allows air filter to be easily attached. The intake system comes complete with quality aluminium pipes, filters, hoses, stainless steel clamps, and brackets. Give your Honda Accord the ultra high performance look, aggressive tune and incredible horsepower gain it needs. * Does not come with CARB sticker please check with your State’s Motor Vehicle Department for regulation. Coupling and hose maybe in the colour of red/blue/black.

These small cars had the original function of being great for run around vehicles but not for much else, until an import builder gets his or hers hands on one and then everything changes for the better as we will see with this car. Now this is a Honda Civic Si, built in 1994 and basically if Jon Guadalupe (Jon Jon) had not saved this car, it probably would not even be on the road right, let alone looking as it does in far condition than the day that it rolled off the production line over fifteen years ago. It is not luck that the builder himself has been in the business of import building since 1995 and it shows on this project. It would be easy to pour money into this car, all projects will eat up as money as the builder wants to throw at it, but that is not necessarily going to work.

The builder needs to be artist and have the flair with a touch of vision in order to make the most of the budget and produce a wonderful looking car, such as the Honda Civic Si we see before us, this is one of the best examples of this model around, there is no doubt of that.

However, that does not mean that this car has been built on budget, far from it, after all nobody installs $1,800 seats and spends $1,400 on a set of callipers if they are restricted in the finance department. It is just a matter of application, putting the money into the right places, which is the key to a successful build, sure not everyone gets it and sometimes that shows. Not in this case though, as this Honda Civic Si rocks in the best possible way.
