This Mazda6 first hit the roads in the US during 2003, but the power would have only been around 136 HP to a sporty 146 HP. But that is nothing to get too excited about and soon with some clever tricks of the trade, import builders would be able to knock out up to 300 HP with just a few fine tweaks here and there, this is what modifying cars is all about.

This particular version of the Mazda6 is the 2006 model it has the look and styling but at the same time there are subtle changes that have been designed to produce better performance but look out of place when compared to the standard road going car. A good example of this is the front end, the carbon fibre grill replaces the standard fitting, but it gives the car and entirely different look from the front.

The body is smooth and rounded, while the addition of some serious 18 x 7.5 inch Momo alloy wheels with Falken rubber shows even the uninitiated that this is a car that has something extra under the hood! Yet the builder here has elected to introduce just a few changes that are designed to improve performance, such as an AEM air intake, Magnaflow exhaust and BC Racing coilovers. The Mazda 6 replaced the equally successful Mazda 626, which in its day was equally as exciting, but the Mazda 6 has something that other cars do not and that is the wide choice of options. Even off the production line, the buyer would have a choice of either the high power or standard power version, the high power version offering around 250 HP, which is nothing compared to this modified racing version that with extensive work can produce around six hundred horse power. Couple this with rear wheel drive and you have got yourself a serious machine built for drifting machine.

Whatever way you look at this car, it’s a winner, not only because of the serious power under that long hood, but this is build that has been brought out of the need for speed and has been built to provide maximum power from the basic factory build, which not something that everyone can do or even contemplate. However, with the necessary skills and backing this is something that has been achieved here.

BMI Racing is a tuning firm running out of Los Angeles, they have taken the basic RX-8 and turned into some sort of mega car, by creating a four rotor power unit, this is the kind of unit that the works race car would have for a 24 hours series race. The Mazda RX-8 still uses the super cool Wankel rotary engine, that is capable of delivering serious power but from an engine that displaces 1.3 litres. In fact, the actual engine design is made up of two 654 cc power units and yet the standard version will produce around 189 HP, whereas the high power model will be knocking out around 250 HP and that is on the factory settings. So it is very clear why a Mazda RX-8 would be of interest to all import builders, not only do you have the beautiful styling of the car, you have the engineering excellence that has been developed over the years.

I love this version of the RX-8, it still has the style of the original design and yet we see that there are hardly any improvements on the bodywork, just a few nice touches to bring the whole job together as one. Inside it is a different story, there is definitely a personal feel here, with blue LED’s finishing the effect. When you think of the RX-8 it not always going to be about performance, the car just does not have that image, but why not! Sure this is 2+2, but this model is capable of knocking out 15.84 second time over the quarter mile reaching a top speed of 90 mph, now that is not slow by any ones standard and it is what makes this car so exciting and very underrated.

However, even without the strange yet powerful engine, the Mazda is sort of in between cars it is not quite a Japanese car and in is not quite a western brand either. That is where this car falls down, if it were Italian then all of the quirks and strange features would be accepted as being innovative and very cool, but this misunderstood car is very much out there with fans, it is just a matter of convincing others to take second look!

This model is the third and probably the best generation RX-7, it was in production for ten years so that should speak for itself and this is a car powered by a 1.3 litre Wankel Rotary engine producing up to 276 HP as it left the factory. So this is not a car to be snubbed, it is a true sports car with retro feel of the Lotus Elan from the 1960’s, in fact some owners even paint their RX-7’s in the green and yellow colours of Lotus Racing.

Yet this example is a nice and neat car, it is clearly Mazda and the owner is proud of that fact, there is no hiding behind colour schemes, it doesn’t need that when it has 345 HP at the rear wheels. However this is not something that has happened overnight, this is a serious project taking up time and indeed cash, but the result is a car that is proud to be a Mazda RX-7 and why not, who wouldn’t want to be seen cruising around in this car?

However, how technology has moved on, this Mazda had a production run from 1986 to 1991 and the power ratio provided by the 1.3 litre engine ranged from 146 HP up to an impressive 202 HP, with a choice of either a four speed auto or five speed manual gearbox. This is truly one of the most impressive sports cars around; even by today’s standards, the 2^nd generation RX-7 appears to have it all.

Having said that, this is where import builders such as Ivan Lopez step in and just to prove us wrong he takes an RX-7 and not only makes them better, his RX-7 is extremely hot to the max! The 450 HP is testament to that claim although the Nitrous Express unit with fifty shot capacity has a good hand in that, but you still have to imagine having that sort of power under you foot and all of this in a convertible too!

This project is also the perfect job, it has taken a good car and made it great, by introducing some serious kit, but at the same time, this is the sort of project that remains faithful to actual cars design itself. by this I mean that you know immediately that this is the RX-7 as it not hidden under a whole wad of body kits that hide the original lines. To my mind, this has to be a contender to be one of the best RX-7’s in the US and maybe the world.

Luckily, there are import builders around who feel strongly enough about the RX-7 that saving just one model is a mission completed. That is why we are looking at this version of the RX-7 by Tony Nguyen, in fact in his own words, he feels that the RX-7 has become a little bit of an obsession and just by looking at this car, it is clear to see how easy it is to fall under the spell of the Mazda RX-7.

The third generation RX-7 when launched back in 1992 was one of the first production cars to come with a sequential twin turbocharger, this is able to squeeze up to 276 HP out of the tiny 1.3 litre Wankel design engine. Normally that would be enough power for anyone to handle especially from a two seater car.

All versions used the standard Wankel rotary engine with a value of 1.3 litres or 2 x 654 cc, it was offered in regular and high power. The  Six speed manual “High Power” with 247 hp and a 9,000 rpm redline and the five speed manual “Standard Power” offering 189 hp and a redline reduced to 7,500 rpm. Then there is the four speed automatic tuned at 189 hp to 212 hp depending on the market, and finally there is the six speed automatic producing 212 hp with a redline set at 7,500 rpm.

With so many choices and variations this is a car that could have been designed just for import builders with a bit of Mazda know how. With so many variations already on offer to the consumer, just imagine what sort of car could be produced with some serious modifications put in place. The answer is this 2004 Mazda RX-8; it has to be seen to be believed.

Mazda RX-8 owner “Mad” Mike Whiddett, is no stranger to serious cars, after all he is a pro drifter! Most of the work has been done under the hood, although that rear spoiler is a bit of give away that this is a car that means business. On the pro circuits, there are those cars built to be looked at, then you have cars built to perform and finally in a league of their own there are the pro drifters who are not people that drift from place to place. These are drivers, builders and teams who are taking on the Japanese at their own game and in many cases are beating them, the following of Formula Drift is huge.

Drifting is a serious sport these days and as such it attracts major sponsorships and advertising, even the big firms want in and that is testament to the success of drifting in the US. This car is the Mazda RX 8 run by Justin Pawlak and Bergenholtz Racing, it was a modified from new. Therefore, this is car that has not only never been on the road, it had never been raced before either and yet by the end of its first season it had finished ninth in the championship.

The car uses a three rotor Wankel 20B engine from Mazdatrix and once it was installed in the car with a Tial Sports GT40XSPL turbo, a Burns Stainless Inconel turbo header, a Tial Sports wastegate, a Tial Sports blow-off valve and a HKS intercooler this car is producing around 600 HP. Drifting is all about putting down the power in the right places, this has the power and the driver, so it is only a matter of time before this car is a champion!

Well if this version by Ferdie Quizon is anything to go on, then this type of car fits in very well, of course, you need to have the vision of what a car could look like once fully modified in the first place otherwise all of that time and money would have been wasted. However, this is a cool looking build that has taken an average family car and turned it into a cool modified car.

The build shows that white with black features really goes, the way that the Gemini Composites carbon fibre reverse cowl hood is blended in with the roof is a very nice touch it breaks up the whole car in a way that all white could ever achieve. The only change to this theme is the gold coloured iForged Sprints wheels; they actually break up the look and are better than all black wheels.

Under the hood the 2.0 litre engine has been boosted by the fantastic Garrett T3 turbo charger, add to this the Spool Innovations tubular turbo manifold, and of course the essential Tial external wastegate then you end up with a serious power unit capable of delivering a very nice 210 HP, which for a five door family hatchback is seriously cool!
