This Mazda6 first hit the roads in the US during 2003, but the power would have only been around 136 HP to a sporty 146 HP. But that is nothing to get too excited about and soon with some clever tricks of the trade, import builders would be able to knock out up to 300 HP with just a few fine tweaks here and there, this is what modifying cars is all about.

This particular version of the Mazda6 is the 2006 model it has the look and styling but at the same time there are subtle changes that have been designed to produce better performance but look out of place when compared to the standard road going car. A good example of this is the front end, the carbon fibre grill replaces the standard fitting, but it gives the car and entirely different look from the front.

The body is smooth and rounded, while the addition of some serious 18 x 7.5 inch Momo alloy wheels with Falken rubber shows even the uninitiated that this is a car that has something extra under the hood! Yet the builder here has elected to introduce just a few changes that are designed to improve performance, such as an AEM air intake, Magnaflow exhaust and BC Racing coilovers. The Mazda 6 replaced the equally successful Mazda 626, which in its day was equally as exciting, but the Mazda 6 has something that other cars do not and that is the wide choice of options. For the buyer it is like having a car personally built for them and with a choice of power from around 136 HP up to around 280 HP the possibilities are almost endless, limited by the owners imagination and wallet!

This modified version of the car has only a limited amount of work under the hood, with a K & N intake being the most prominent change. This car is in fact a Mazdaspeed Mazda6 and as such, this comes with a little bit more than you would expect to find in a standard family sedan. Its powerful 2.3 litre turbocharged engine is guaranteed to deliver a minimum of 274 HP and that is not the sort of power you would expect to find in car that is being used to carry the groceries home or transport the children every day!

This is a car that has been carefully modified, so that the original features appear to be left intact, but subtle changes to the bodywork, engine and interior make this car a great piece of work because to the untrained eye it appears to be how the engineers in the factory intended. However, in reality this is car that is hardly anything like the car that left the production line.

To truly experience this car, the builders have produced a cool video and posted it on YouTube, check it out to see just how cool this car is, it is the next best thing to getting behind the wheel yourself, although wouldn’t that be the coolest thing too! Even though this car is modified, the builder Chris Zitkevitz from New Jersey has made it so it has a dual purpose, fantastic modified exhibition car and daily run-around, normally a builder would keep their pride and joy under lock and key, but you can well imagine this car being driven around the neighbourhood every now and then.

The car originally offered the buyer a wide choice of options including a choice of engines from the 1.8 litre, 2.0 litre, 2.3 litre and a 3.0 litre V6, as well as a four, five or six speed auto and a five or six speed manual gearbox. These choices mean that there is between 136 HP and 190 HP on offer on the factory built car, so these are not your average family cars in the first place.

So now it seems that maybe the Mazda6s is one of the real gems out there just waiting for an enthusiastic import builder to come along and their thing on one of these car, as Chris Zitkevitz has done with this car. One fine example of this trend is the Mazda6 built by Chris Zitkevitz from New Jersey; he bought this car not with the intention of making any modifications to it, as the car was intended to be just that his car! This Mazda6 lives in New York and so it looks like a regular Mazda6 as would have come off the production line, but looks can be deceiving and when you live in a big city it is not always a great idea to show off everything that you have. This car does that well behind the body of a family sedan is the heart and brain of a thoroughbred racing machine.

As you can see from the specifications below, very little work has been done on the exterior, but on contrast to that, the engine and transmission modifications have seen extensive work on them. In fact, the exterior has subtle changes and beautiful coat of paint, so it has not been left out of the build at all.

The work has been evenly spread around this car with some changes under the hood, such as a new short ram intake and custom turbo inlet pipe. Whereas around the car there are slight additions and changes that appear to be part of the original design, but are not and the only way you would is if this car was standing next to an identical factory finished model.

This is a first generation model, which can been being used as a family run around to a police car, it is clear to see why, the choice of engine varies from 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 3.0 V6 litre units, with the choice of a four, five and six speed auto or a five and six speed auto gearbox. This is a Mazda 6 and before Chris “Kit” Kitkevitz got his hands on it, it could well have done the work of the standard family car. However, no it is hard to even think about seeing a car such as this parked up in the drive or waiting outside of the school waiting for the kids.

Surprisingly the production car had a choice of 1.8 litre, 2.0 litre, 2.3 litre and 3.0 litre V6 engines and a choice of a 4 speed Sport automatic, 5 speed automatic, 5 speed manual, 6 speed automatic and 6 speed manual gearboxes.

Around the car, there are minor mechanical modifications, but what makes this car a star is the interior dash area, you can see from the image that it is simply more than special; in fact, the enterprise would have a job to compete with this set up. Breathtaking would be what we call it as that is the only phrase that can aptly describe it.

Even though there has been some major attention to detail, this is also a clean job too if that is at all possible. There may be flashes of bright red around the interior, but these are cleanly installed with no messy last minute additions that look so awful, it is understandable why this car is in great demand.

The air filter can be totally taken apart and cleaned. The foam is denser and more thicker than the Dragon filter.

The velocity stank inside the air filter is a TRUE VELOCITY STACK. The Air filter has Ram Air capability, by hooking up the hose to the top of the air filter.

The intake has another Air Passage way inside the intake pipe to create an Air Fusion, imagine two different pathways of air inside the intake pipe, one air travelling in pathway #1 going 2 x faster than pathway #2.
