However, even without the strange yet powerful engine, the Mazda is sort of in between cars it is not quite a Japanese car and in is not quite a western brand either. That is where this car falls down, if it were Italian then all of the quirks and strange features would be accepted as being innovative and very cool, but this misunderstood car is very much out there with fans, it is just a matter of convincing others to take second look!

This model is the third and probably the best generation RX-7, it was in production for ten years so that should speak for itself and this is a car powered by a 1.3 litre Wankel Rotary engine producing up to 276 HP as it left the factory. So this is not a car to be snubbed, it is a true sports car with retro feel of the Lotus Elan from the 1960’s, in fact some owners even paint their RX-7’s in the green and yellow colours of Lotus Racing.

Yet this example is a nice and neat car, it is clearly Mazda and the owner is proud of that fact, there is no hiding behind colour schemes, it doesn’t need that when it has 345 HP at the rear wheels. However this is not something that has happened overnight, this is a serious project taking up time and indeed cash, but the result is a car that is proud to be a Mazda RX-7 and why not, who wouldn’t want to be seen cruising around in this car?

However, how technology has moved on, this Mazda had a production run from 1986 to 1991 and the power ratio provided by the 1.3 litre engine ranged from 146 HP up to an impressive 202 HP, with a choice of either a four speed auto or five speed manual gearbox. This is truly one of the most impressive sports cars around; even by today’s standards, the 2^nd generation RX-7 appears to have it all.

Having said that, this is where import builders such as Ivan Lopez step in and just to prove us wrong he takes an RX-7 and not only makes them better, his RX-7 is extremely hot to the max! The 450 HP is testament to that claim although the Nitrous Express unit with fifty shot capacity has a good hand in that, but you still have to imagine having that sort of power under you foot and all of this in a convertible too!

This project is also the perfect job, it has taken a good car and made it great, by introducing some serious kit, but at the same time, this is the sort of project that remains faithful to actual cars design itself. by this I mean that you know immediately that this is the RX-7 as it not hidden under a whole wad of body kits that hide the original lines. To my mind, this has to be a contender to be one of the best RX-7’s in the US and maybe the world.

Luckily, there are import builders around who feel strongly enough about the RX-7 that saving just one model is a mission completed. That is why we are looking at this version of the RX-7 by Tony Nguyen, in fact in his own words, he feels that the RX-7 has become a little bit of an obsession and just by looking at this car, it is clear to see how easy it is to fall under the spell of the Mazda RX-7.

However, the RX-7 is a sports coupe, a car worthy of being looked at as being cool and stylish; this is where the team behind the Genki 7 Mazda RX-7 build have their work cut out. But this job is helped by the actual design of the car itself, it looks great because it has that sleek low line that flows right from the front to the rear in one easy movement.

One of the main features of this build is that huge spoiler at the rear; it looks odd because it breaks up the line of the car. However, this carbon fibre beauty, adds a touch a performance car to the RX-7 if it ever needed it and because it has been left in the natural colour, it stands out more than it would if they had colour coded the spoiler.

The first thing on the agenda was to introduce a shiny new Cosmo 13B-RE unit, this has literally been highly polished up by a local polishing shop and so it now takes centre stage under the hood. That is unless your eyes spy the fifty shot nitrous unit from Nitrous Express, which as it stands is seriously cool piece of kit that is bound to bring tears to the eyes of anyone who takes this car on.

Under the hood is where most of the action has been taking place on this build and so from the outside there is not much to look at, apart from the noise created as this car burns you off from a standing start at the lights. However, building and modifying is all about personal preferences and with around 450 HP pulling power, this is a car built for performance.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that this car is ugly, because it is not, in fact the second generation RX-7 convertible is one of the best looking cars of its time and still is to a certain extent. Even the wide body kit blends in very nicely and to the untrained eye is hardly likely to be noticed in any case. This is a nice job that has been completed with style and it shows.

Therefore, you know now, that this car uses the 1.3 litre Wankel rotary engine, which is light and situated just behind the front axle making this a front mid engine powered car! yet this is no run around or car with no guts, it actually produces over 250 HP, however the owner of this RX7 Dr Wada, has managed to tweak it enough so this featured car is now producing in excess of 500 HP!

This of course is car modified for the track and by all accounts over the years, the car has been off the road and entrenched in the tuning scene there have been some serious changes to the RX7. Naturally, it has been stripped down and rebuilt to create a light and versatile racing machine, but under the hood, there has been some serious work going on.

Usually this type of race car would be built and run by the person that gets behind the wheel to battle with other like minded individuals and this where Kyle Mohan steps up to take a standard 1991 Mazda RX 7 and completely transform it into a racing machine. It may sound easy but when you are blasting it around the track at 150 mph, the driver is going to want every last nut and bolt to hold fast!

It is safe to say that although this car resembles the road going version of the RX 7, this model under the body is really nothing like that car at all. One success story from the LA region is Justin L Pawlak; he only started in the field of racing back in 2006, but has quickly risen through the ranks to become a FD pro license holder and therefore a force to be reckoned with in the series. This is a 1993 third generation model, it uses the 13B rotary engine, which as shows is merely a 1.3 litre engine, but this is a Wankel rotary engine capable of delivering well over 250 HP with the help of the sequential twin turbo charger arrangement. This of course is what makes these cars so popular with drivers and import builders too.

Even though there has been a lot of work been put into this car, it is clear that this is still a Mazda RX-7 and that is so important to keep the lines of the original car, of course additions will be made such as side skirts and air dams. However, once that beautiful red paint is applied the whole project has taken shape and we get to see this fantastic car in its finished glory.

To say that this car required some work is an understatement, but it is builders like Ben Abutin with the vision and around $30,000 to spend on this project that can make something like this happen.
