Even off the production line, the buyer would have a choice of either the high power or standard power version, the high power version offering around 250 HP, which is nothing compared to this modified racing version that with extensive work can produce around six hundred horse power. Couple this with rear wheel drive and you have got yourself a serious machine built for drifting machine.

Whatever way you look at this car, it’s a winner, not only because of the serious power under that long hood, but this is build that has been brought out of the need for speed and has been built to provide maximum power from the basic factory build, which not something that everyone can do or even contemplate. However, with the necessary skills and backing this is something that has been achieved here.

BMI Racing is a tuning firm running out of Los Angeles, they have taken the basic RX-8 and turned into some sort of mega car, by creating a four rotor power unit, this is the kind of unit that the works race car would have for a 24 hours series race. However, these guys have done this by simply joining two units together, sounds simple and it probably is for the right people. However, for the rest of us we just back and admire the handy work of these cool guys.

The Mazda RX-8 still uses the super cool Wankel rotary engine, that is capable of delivering serious power but from an engine that displaces 1.3 litres. In fact, the actual engine design is made up of two 654 cc power units and yet the standard version will produce around 189 HP, whereas the high power model will be knocking out around 250 HP and that is on the factory settings. So it is very clear why a Mazda RX-8 would be of interest to all import builders, not only do you have the beautiful styling of the car, you have the engineering excellence that has been developed over the years.

I love this version of the RX-8, it still has the style of the original design and yet we see that there are hardly any improvements on the bodywork, just a few nice touches to bring the whole job together as one. Inside it is a different story, there is definitely a personal feel here, with blue LED’s finishing the effect. When you think of the RX-8 it not always going to be about performance, the car just does not have that image, but why not! Sure this is 2+2, but this model is capable of knocking out 15.84 second time over the quarter mile reaching a top speed of 90 mph, now that is not slow by any ones standard and it is what makes this car so exciting and very underrated.

All versions used the standard Wankel rotary engine with a value of 1.3 litres or 2 x 654 cc, it was offered in regular and high power. The  Six speed manual “High Power” with 247 hp and a 9,000 rpm redline and the five speed manual “Standard Power” offering 189 hp and a redline reduced to 7,500 rpm. Then there is the four speed automatic tuned at 189 hp to 212 hp depending on the market, and finally there is the six speed automatic producing 212 hp with a redline set at 7,500 rpm.

With so many choices and variations this is a car that could have been designed just for import builders with a bit of Mazda know how. On the pro circuits, there are those cars built to be looked at, then you have cars built to perform and finally in a league of their own there are the pro drifters who are not people that drift from place to place. It is a huge challenge moving to another country but to start a business in a sector that is already loaded with established firms, that takes a lot of courage. However, this is something that this couple have managed to overcome and this 2009 Mazda RX 8 is proof that their skills and talents are well at home in the US.

This is a special car, with a four rotor engine whereas the standard Mazda RX 8 engine would have been the traditional three rotor 20B engine, the four rotor R26B was originally used for the cars entered into the 1991 Le Man 24 Hours race. The car in question has been modified to produce a top notch performance car, but at the same has managed to keep the style and design of the original car from the outside. While there are some slight additions to the bodywork such as the side skirt, this blends in nicely and is not over the top or bulky, as some cars seem to be.

It is performance that the RX 8 delivers and even before the modification, this was a car that for its size offered performance well over what would be expected from a car sporting a 1.3 litre engine. However, this is Wankel technology and so in its basic configuration the RX 8 would be delivering around 210 HP and that is before any modifications had taken place.

With that sort of performance, there is little that can or should be done under the hood, although it is not unknown for an RX 8 to be modified to deliver in excess of 250 HP with only some minor adjustments to the set up. This all rounder has performance and looks going for it, these are two main features for an import builder to go for; it works very well in this case.

This car has been built by Speed Machine Performance (SMP), they run a retail side and a builder side of the business, while choosing the Mazda RX 8 platform to build on they have picked a car that is loved by a select few, or rather lucky drivers who get the chance to sit behind the wheel of these cars.

This may be powered by a small 1.3 litre engine, but this is rotary power and as such the car would have been producing a massive 220 HP through to the wheels. The advantage is clear that these engines are small and light, while producing a big package of power that is bound to put any other car in the class to shame.

Of course there are plenty of fans of the RX8, there are also plenty of the people around that have little knowledge of the Wankel Rotary Engine. which in the RX8 is only 1.3 litre but produces a whopping 210 HP on the four port Renesis version or alternatively the six port Renesis with six speed manual gearbox produces 250 HP.

The Mazda in question is a great looking machine, with many of the panels being replaced by carbon fibre, as this is strong and light. This gives car much more acceleration, stability and because of the lighter weight, means it gets better fuel economy too, not that is going to be an issue when this RX8 being driven flat out around the track.

The cool Mazda RX8 is one of those underestimated cars that in the right hands can become some sort of super car, but it takes import builders with style and know how, cash helps too! To take a standard off the production line sports car build it up and show it off, take more than just money and facilities it’s a skill and a lifestyle.

The Mazda RX8 came out in 2003, but in actual fact is still going strong too, it is a four door coupe although you wouldn’t know it! Believe it or not the standard engine was a 1.3 litre version of the Wankel rotary engine, but there were some upgrades to a four port producing 210 HP or the more powerful six port offering 250 HP.
