Within the engine range there is a 1.3 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, 1.8 litre and 2.0 litre diesel too! the power range is just as wide from a low 72 HP right up to a jaw dropping 168 HP. This means for the import builder there are stacks of spares around allowing them to take a basic car and turn into something wonderful, just as this builder has done with this 1993 Corolla with the 1.5 litre producing 104 HP.

In fact, the work on this car has been mainly cosmetic, with the engine bay remaining untouched, it is a great example of how somebody with little mechanical knowledge is able to take a basic looking family car and taken it to another level just through the design and styling of car. Rather than concentrating on performance, which is something that is experienced and not actually seen with the naked eye.

Basically, what has happened here is that the car looks great, in fact it is probably better now than it was when it first left the production line back in 1993! The while high gloss paintwork actually works well here, it gives the car a new fresh look. Combined with those seventeen inch Advanti Photon wheels, the exterior look is complete and is just about as good as any Toyota Corolla from the nineties is going to look!

Yet even when a twenty five year old car looks as good as this Corolla does, the buyer still would not give it is go, but why is that? It is more than just the car, it is more down to the little things, such as the door handles, the buttons on the dash and even the down to the sounds and smells of the car. So while style and design has a part to play, it is something deeper as to why older cars are owned by certain people.

This Toyota Corolla is the AE86 chassis version it is a lot sportier than the sedan or five door lift back, it has that sweeping look as the back cuts away down to the rear, that stands out as something different. The engine would have been the 1.6 litre DOHC fuel injected version that delivers around 130 HP, but currently the Corolla can do more, in fact closer to 180 HP with only a few adjustments.

Under the hood, the modifications have pushed up the HP, but this is a small car and any slight change is going to be a lot of difference to the performance of the car. In fact this is quite an eye catching machine with the colouring not the only thing that stands out from the crowd. The car is based in Hawaii so the owner benefits from virtual all day warmth and sunshine. This particular model started off as an automatic, so naturally that had to change.

The car dates back to the 80’s and its paintwork makes it look like a police car rather than a race car, yet this is a car that is nearly twenty five years old, but does not look a day older than any other car on the block. That is what four years of dedication and plenty of hard work does.

1974 must have been a good year for cars, this Toyota Corolla would have cost a less new than a run around would today and yet this car does have a class of its own; it has lines curves, chrome, proper paint and not mod cons.

Yet in some views this could be a classic car, but it’s not, this is show car that has taken five years to build so far and it still remains an unfinished project and it is hardly surprising considering the Paul Aguas had to source parts for this car from all over the world.

What makes this so good, is that Paul has no mechanical experience at all, but build this bright red machine gave him the insight into the way that each part works and what it does, which is probably the best way to learn.

The most fascinating thing about the Corolla is that this has got a turbo, in order to make this possible the bore had to be increased taking the 1588 cc engine up to 1854 cc, but looking at the car with its old style wheels  this car is definitely a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Surprisingly the car used every day, it has not been raced or put into any shows either so at the end of the day this car is a just an everyday car that has been rebuilt by a man loves cars but has no mechanical experience at all, the best way to go.
