Within the engine range there is a 1.3 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, 1.8 litre and 2.0 litre diesel too! the power range is just as wide from a low 72 HP right up to a jaw dropping 168 HP. This means for the import builder there are stacks of spares around allowing them to take a basic car and turn into something wonderful, just as this builder has done with this 1993 Corolla with the 1.5 litre producing 104 HP.

In fact, the work on this car has been mainly cosmetic, with the engine bay remaining untouched, it is a great example of how somebody with little mechanical knowledge is able to take a basic looking family car and taken it to another level just through the design and styling of car. Rather than concentrating on performance, which is something that is experienced and not actually seen with the naked eye.

Basically, what has happened here is that the car looks great, in fact it is probably better now than it was when it first left the production line back in 1993! The while high gloss paintwork actually works well here, it gives the car a new fresh look. The Supra comes with a 3.0 litre inline six cylinder engine the basic version of which would be producing around 220 HP, but with an engine such as this, there is plenty of scope for more power to be built in, such as the twin turbo option run in sequential mode. Unusually Toyota offered three choices of gearbox with the Supra, a four speed auto or a five or six speed manual the gearbox choice determines the potential acceleration and of course top speed.

This version of the Supra has been finished to a very high standard and yet appearances can be very deceptive. For this is car that harnesses all of the power that has been built into it and is able to precisely launching the car from a standing start to speed heaven. It is a very deceptive car, but at the end of the day this is rear wheel drive twin turbo powered car with the auto gearbox switched to six speed manual, speed and power should be its middle names.

This actually helped the car, because as people cut back, standards need not drop when there is an MR2 available. The MR2 offered the buyer a choice of the 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre engines that are coupled together with a four speed auto or five speed manual gearbox and capable of producing between 130 HP and 220 HP, this car really was a baby Ferrari in the making.

To start off with there is the all important engine; it started off with the basic 999 cc engine, with a 1.3 litre and 1.5 litre for those who were a little bit sportier. Actually, in such a small car the 1.5 litre engine combined with the five speed manual gearbox would have offered the driver some serious power under the foot around 135 HP, it would have been a dream pulling away from the lights in that.

This is a car that was in production for almost ten years, so there was definitely a market out there for the Starlet and now it is the time for the import builders to get their hands on them and make the car live on by adding some cool body panels with bulges and scoops. Initially the production was powered by the standard 3.0 litre inline six cylinder engine, which actually dates back to the mark two Celica Supra that first hit the streets in 1981! Clearly, there have been factory modifications made to this classic power plant, but basically, it is the same engine that has appeared under the hood in three of the four models from the Supra series spanning thirty years.

With all of that history, this car was and still is a classic it is desired by many import builders who can see the potential in producing something very special indeed and that is exactly what has occurred with this beautiful looking Supra. The mark four is of course by far the best out of all the Supra models, it has that powerful sporty look that is backed up by the ever powerful 3.0 litre twin turbo engine that is capable of delivering up to 320 HP, not bad for a car that weighs 1500 kg. However, this car is no more and it is up to import builders to keep the name and the model going.

Fortunately that is exactly what has been happening and this example is one of the best we have seen for some time, it has the looks and style that the original car had, it also has a look and feel all of its own. I mean you know what this car is when you first lay eyes on it, but as you check it over you begin to see subtle changes that make this car different from any other and that is what it is all about.

The builder has made some serious changes under the hood by introducing HKS equipment throughout, modifying the suspension with Tein Springs is another way of introducing a completely different feel to the original car. However, it is the bodywork where things really shape up with custom panels that add a certain muscle look to the car, the body is the first thing you see and it is a work of art on this car.

However, it would be until the mid nineties, this model appeared; the Mark IV has everything that a driver needs. it has the looks of a sporty car with a decent three litre engine in the front with the pulling power of around between 220 HP and 320 HP, there is even a four speed automatic gearbox available for those who want smooth acceleration up to its 155 mph top speed.

Yet even when a twenty five year old car looks as good as this Corolla does, the buyer still would not give it is go, but why is that? It is more than just the car, it is more down to the little things, such as the door handles, the buttons on the dash and even the down to the sounds and smells of the car. So while style and design has a part to play, it is something deeper as to why older cars are owned by certain people.

This Toyota Corolla is the AE86 chassis version it is a lot sportier than the sedan or five door lift back, it has that sweeping look as the back cuts away down to the rear, that stands out as something different.
