This actually helped the car, because as people cut back, standards need not drop when there is an MR2 available. However in this case there was mixed reports, die hard fans would hear nothing bad said about the car after all second generation is better, isn’t it! According to the motoring press the answer was no, this new car had faults, mainly in the handling area. This was being alerted as a hazard, but for most MR2 drivers having an issue with handling while driving at speed is what driving an MR2 is all about.

The same can be said about this particular MR2, it is owned by New Zealander Scott Finn, he is an engineer by trade and so has the advantage over the rest of us when it come to taking a road car and making it into something special. For the owner of this beauty, Scott Finn the MR2 is more than just about going around a bend flat out, although that can be very exciting with the back end twitching out all of the time. Being a mid engine car, there is little to do inside, but there is a distinct lack of space and this can play havoc with engine cooling. To overcome this issue the rear compartment has been fully utilised to take the air to air intercooler that comes with two massive ten inch fans and a lot of aluminium piping.

The production models of the MR2 GT-S would have come with a standard 2.0 litre turbocharged power unit, this would have peak out at about 218 HP, there was the non turbo 2.2 litre engine, but depending the gear box chosen, the 130 HP would not have set the track on fire. The turbo version would have been able to reach 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and cover the ¼ mile in 14.7 seconds.

Back to Scott’s car, with excellent planning he is using the Apexi power FC engine management system to produce a fantastic 495 HP, this is quite enough to shave around three seconds off the ¼ timings and that is significant, if you wait the for a car to pass and count three seconds that is the difference in distance. However, this build has an estimated cost of about $35,000 so it seems that you get what you pay for!

The MR2 started life as box shaped car during the late 80’s, but this was followed by the second generation model and this is the one that proved to be the most popular and indeed most successful of the range, performance, design and styling all has a hand in shaping this car into what it is today.

The same could said for this brilliant looking Toyota MR2, initially when Ian Shoel first attempt at modifying meant that the car would have S15 headlights, airbrushed flames on top of a candy paint job. It would have been nothing unusual to see lights and other parts turning up on different models, but that trend is giving way to more standardised modifications.

This is the second generation version of the car from 1992, it came with a wide range of choices, from a 2.0 litre engines producing anything from 163 HP up to 242 HP, and so there is clearly a huge difference there already. However, in the US there was only two version available, a 2.2 litre 130 HP version and the MR2 turbo, with a 2.0 litre engine producing a handy 200 HP.

This car is something completely different to almost any other car that has ever existed, there is not mention of the HP, so we are unable to compare that fact, so it does have a 2.0 litre Toyota DOHC Turbo charged engine, so power is not an issue. As for the body, this is very wide for the year, in fact at the time this bodywork must have been quite controversial and revolutionary.

This is the 2^nd generation build, there were quite a range choices when it comes to the engine with a 2.2 litre 130 HP, a 2.0 litre 163 HP and a Turbo charged 2.0 litre producing a maximum 242 HP. The gear box choice ranges from a four speed automatic and five speed manual. To add to mix there are three body types, the Coupe, GT Coupe and the very popular GT T Bar.

With all of those choices, it is a surprise that the humble Toyota MR2 is not more popular, as builders appear to like to work on the unusual rather than the obvious, which unfortunately the MR2 appears to be. The car has been almost modified to death in the body department, with almost all of the exterior being transformed with some sort of panel or modification. This trend follows throughout the car with a decent nitrous unit and turbo being installed just to add that little bit of boost that makes so much difference.

Just a quick mention on the interior, it looks as if the whole interior has been covered with a suede effect type material and this is the sort of covering that would have been seen in a high performance car from the 1980’s!

This is a pure Japanese deal and it is not likely to ever leave the shores of the country even as a flying visit, but every single part of this car is perfect. It looks fantastic and as you can imagine it is going to drive brilliantly too.

In total the build has, an estimated cost of the work done on this car is around $22,000, which is not a lot when you consider that it is a nice piece of work, no. It is a fantastic piece of work where everything has been taken into consideration and worked on to make it perfect and where it was perfect, it has been made better.
