All Evos use the same 2.0 litre engine with a choice of either s five or six speed manual gearbox, but it is what can be done with the engine that is so impressive. Therefore, as the car pulls out of the factory you can expect to be receiving around 200 HP, but with some fine tuning this can easily be increased to over 400 HP and that is seriously impressive by any accounts.

Under the hood of this modified car there are plenty of branded parts, you can see Greddy, AMS and NX straight away and this stuff apart from being costly means business. This is not tinkering by anyone’s standards, this is building the car from factory specs to import builder perfection, which is the aim of the project, to build the best car around and this Evo 8 is easily there.

This car may be finished in black on yellow, but you should not hold that against it, colours are subjective to say the least and mean nothing. Performance is key here and despite the fact that there are no figure for the car, you can make a guess that they are not getting 200 HP out of this baby. If we had to guess this is getting closer to the perfect 400 HP and why not, it has the look and therefore should have what it takes too!

But the Civic is nothing but versatile and because of this it should be a dream car for import builders as they need cars with plenty of spares available and they also have to be something different too, which the Civic is. So take this unassuming looking car and start to pull it apart and you are left with a good base for a great build.

The first thing that stands out with this car is the colouring, this bright yellow and blue design is the colouring of builder racing team, Spoon Sports, this team is well known in Japan not just as a racers. Nevertheless, as testers for Honda too, this car from 1985 is significant because this is when the company was formed, this is where Spoon started and now Tatsuru Ichishima the president of Spoon is a national hero and racing icon.

The evolution III brought in that classic two door coupe body shape that we still see in the fifth generation car, it would have been powered by the straight six 2.6 litre engine and came with a standard five speed manual gearbox. Customer options were clearly not top of the manufacturers wish list with this car, but 313 HP soon made up for any short fall on the optional upgrade menu to start with!

So this is a 1990 model, that makes it one of the early versions and yet this car looks just good now as it did when it pulled of the showroom, in fact it is probably better in many ways as this is a modified car. The Evolution 8 was launched in 2003 and although from the outside there are only subtle changes, the eighth evolution had some serious modifications to the brakes, suspension, electrics and not to mention the work done on the 2.0 litre four cylinder turbo charged engine. This engine provides around 230 HP, although with this kind of set up the sky it the limit to how much power the driver wants under their foot.

But the great thing about this car is that it can be modified fairly easily the only real limitation is budget, you can literally spend as much or as little as you need to in order to achieve the desired effect and this is what make the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution a true import builders dream machine. As this one is a fine example of what you can do, without going over the top with excessive body panels and bright paint jobs.

This smart looking Evo 8, is tidy and clean, with most of the work being done on the inside and in particular under the hood, where it can now achieve a very respectable 270 HP. This is due to the addition of Injen, HKS, Waverac and of course we must not forget those all import NGK’s, no car should be seen without these! This is the first generation of the Solara although the Camry sedan has been around for much longer, but these two models are hardly comparable at all, as it seems that the name is just a branding, but the car is a completely different entity. During its time the car had ups and downs, it was mainly built for Japanese market and yet in a similar way as the Nissan Skyline did, so called “Grey Imports” meant that the FTO began to appear in sorts of places. This is how the demand began, because if an import builder happened to spot one of these cars at a meet, they would immediately want to know what it was and how they could get hold of the FTO.

Initially the power would be restricted at around 123 HP, which for a car of this size is nothing to get excited about, but Mitsubishi gave the FTO more power taking it up to a respectable 197 HP, of course a skilled import builder would be able to squeeze a bit more out the car. As we see with this car in the images, there has been extensive work under the hood the main object being more power under the foot.

Naturally, not all of us have the resources that builders like Donlyson Auto Concepts have, but it is their business after all and they have access to all of the skills and products that many of import builder fans could only dream of. However we do get to see and admire the end results of the work put into these cars and with each project being different you just never know exactly what you are going to find.

Traditionally the Nissan 350Z would have been delivered with a classic 3.5 litre V6 producing up to 306 HP through either a five speed auto or six speed manual gearbox. Although some builders have been known to drop a 4.5 litre V8 power unit into the car, this project has kept the original engine and worked with that to produce this powerful yet very beautiful version of the Nissan 350Z.

All of the work on this car has been carried by Donlyson Auto Concepts, the list is very long indeed, with almost anything that can be upgraded under the hood, and the body having been done there is hardly any room for improvement for this car. Could this be one of the best Nissan 350Z’s around! Who knows, all we can say is that this car is a contender and well deserved it is too!

On the pro circuits, there are those cars built to be looked at, then you have cars built to perform and finally in a league of their own there are the pro drifters who are not people that drift from place to place. These are drivers, builders and teams who are taking on the Japanese at their own game and in many cases are beating them, the following of Formula Drift is huge.

Drifting is a serious sport these days and as such it attracts major sponsorships and advertising, even the big firms want in and that is testament to the success of drifting in the US. This car is the Mazda RX 8 run by Justin Pawlak and Bergenholtz Racing, it was a modified from new. Therefore, this is car that has not only never been on the road, it had never been raced before either and yet by the end of its first season it had finished ninth in the championship.

The car uses a three rotor Wankel 20B engine from Mazdatrix and once it was installed in the car with a Tial Sports GT40XSPL turbo, a Burns Stainless Inconel turbo header, a Tial Sports wastegate, a Tial Sports blow-off valve and a HKS intercooler this car is producing around 600 HP. Drifting is all about putting down the power in the right places, this has the power and the driver, so it is only a matter of time before this car is a champion!

The Mitsubishi 3000GT may have started off as the Mitsubishi GTO but whatever they call it this is a very interesting machine with an even more interesting background. The Mitsubishi 3000GT or GTO has been with us since the early nineties and with some minor changes only, this car is more or less the same car over its ten year production run, which is quite extraordinary for time when car production was at its height.

There are four versions of the three litre engine, the 6G72 3.0 L V6 (160 HP), SOHC 12v (221 HP), DOHC 24v (276 HP) and last but not least the DOHC 24v twin-turbo (319 HP). The attraction to this car is obvious, it has the looks, style, power and an iconic GTO name, which the company dropped because of the connection with Ferrari and Pontiac, Mitsubishi, needed this car to be become a standalone sports coupe, which of course it has become.

This particular model comes in silver, which was not the most popular colour at the time, but now it actually looks like an interesting car, with just some flashes of red brakes visible through those beautiful eighteen inch Volk alloy wheels. The beauty of this modification is that it offers the best of all worlds, it would be no surprise to see it cruising past you on the road and yet it can equally be at home on the track too. However, the RX-7 is a sports coupe, a car worthy of being looked at as being cool and stylish; this is where the team behind the Genki 7 Mazda RX-7 build have their work cut out. But this job is helped by the actual design of the car itself, it looks great because it has that sleek low line that flows right from the front to the rear in one easy movement.

One of the main features of this build is that huge spoiler at the rear; it looks odd because it breaks up the line of the car. However, this carbon fibre beauty, adds a touch a performance car to the RX-7 if it ever needed it and because it has been left in the natural colour, it stands out more than it would if they had colour coded the spoiler.
